Fire Fighting Sprinkler Water Tanks: Construction & Agriculture

Our range of polyethene firefighting sprinkler water storage tanks is designed to store large amounts of water for fire-fighting purposes at industrial and agricultural sites.  Construction sites are areas potentially with fuel and building work, a lot of construction sites require 45,000 litres (10,000 gallons) of water on-site as a legal or insurance requirements.  In agriculture, a lot of farms can be isolated from mains water supplies but also sometimes combine rainwater harvesting and farm water use with these tanks.

Fire Sprinkler Water Tanks, otherwise known as firefighting water storage tanks, are designed to safely store water to feed fire sprinkler systems or for on-site firefighting water storage. Our fire water tanks are available with or without Fluid Category 5 backflow prevention.  Specific requirements of BS EN 12845 and BS 9251 for firefighting water storage should be closely followed too to ensure automatic fire sprinkler systems and fire protection systems are fit for purpose and meet the relevant requirements of industry standards and hazard classification.

Polyethene tanks have a distinct advantage over steel tanks as they will not rust and are very easy to maintain. Polyethene tanks are also very adaptable and can be fitted with numerous connection options to suit most installations.  Our water supply tanks for automatic sprinkler systems come in a wide range of tank sizes depending on the volume of water that is required.

Section 15 of Approved Document B deals with Fire Mains and Hydrants and subsection 15.8 specifically states,

“Where no piped water supply is available, or there is insufficient pressure and flow in the water main, or an alternative arrangement is proposed, the alternative source of supply should be provided in accordance with the following recommendations:

• A charged static water tank of at least 45,000 litres capacity; or
• A spring, river, canal or pond capable of providing or storing at least 45,000 litres of water at all times of the year, to which access, space and hard standing are available for a pumping appliance
• Or any other means of providing a water supply for fire-fighting operations considered appropriate by the fire and rescue authority”.

Performance & Regulations

To ensure optimum performance, the following ancillary items are usually fitted to our fire water storage tanks:

• A reliable water supply connection
• Float or Ball valve on the tank infill.
• AB airgap provision with side spill over weir and cowl
• A drain valve at a low level
• Option side access hatch is provided at ground level
• A cat & mouse or electronic device to show the level of water in the tank

Tank Accessories & Fittings

We offer a wide range of BSRT (British Standard Round Thread) fire fittings – adaptors, caps and couplings – in 2 1/2″, 4″ and 5″ variants.

Optional AB gap provision for meeting the water regulations CAT5 requirements.  Fluid Category 5 AB Air Gap Break Tank – The installation and use of cold water storage cisterns and sectional tanks connected to the public water supply must comply with Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 in England and Wales and the technically identical Scottish Water Byelaws. To meet these requirements, Fluid Category 5 Break Tanks must be used in this instance.
