Clarification Tanks For Wastewater Treatment
Clarification tanks are used in wastewater management is one of the key steps in wastewater treatment. The treatment can be primary, where solids and sediments are removed from the raw sewage, or secondary after flocculation.
What does clarification entail?
The primary or mechanical treatment removes floating and suspended solids from the effluent. This might include filters or a weir to trap gross solids and the removal of sediments that settle at the bottom of the tank. Any pollutant embedded in the sediment is removed in the process. It includes screening or a weir to trap solid objects and sedimentation by gravity to remove suspended solids. This level is sometimes referred to as “mechanical treatment“, through chemicals.
The clarifier tank
A clarification tank with a coned bottom is ideal for removing sediment since it settles at the base of the cone. This can be a continuous mechanised process. The primary treatment can reduce the biological oxygen demand (BOD) by 20-30% and the total suspended solids by 50-60%. Sometimes chemicals may be added in dosing tanks to speed up the process. However, large amounts of reagents may be needed to treat domestic wastewater, so preliminary chemical coagulation and flocculation are generally not used.
Secondary Clarifiers for Water Treatment
A secondary clarification tank is used to remove flocs. These may have been created by biological growth produced in some methods of secondary treatment such as activated sludge, trickling filters, and rotating biological contactors. These are often part of a package treatment plant which also involves coagulation and flocculation to further purify the wastewater.
Enduramaxx has a range of Clarifier / Clarification Tanks in various sizes up to 12,000 litres.
