What Is A Tank Bund? Why Tank Bunds Are Used

What is a bud? What is a tank bund? To answer your questions a tank bund is an area or secondary containment system around storage tanks or storage drums used to hold flammable or toxic liquids.  An impermeable floor and walls create a watertight area around a storage tank so any liquid which escapes the primary containment is retained in the bund and prevented from spilling onto the site or escaping to the environment.

These can be open top for internal applications or enclosed if this is outside to stop rainwater from entering the bund and also used within buildings for process vessels.

HSE Requirements For Secondary Containment Of Chemicals

It is an HSE requirement for secondary containment for chemicals tanks storing dangerous or hazardous chemicals to have a bund. Enduramaxx have a range of plastic bunded chemical storage tanks, bunds and drip trays which can help meet this legal requirement.

Chemical Storage Bunds

Chemical Storage Bunds or Bund Tanks are compatible with our range of dosing tanks. These are secondary containment system that stops water or hazardous liquids lost from the tank seeping through into the environment. These are designed to hold 110% of the volume of the corresponding tank size and are used as well to contain a spillage should any of the fittings become broken or loose.

Bund Tanks

These provide an additional layer of containment to a dosing tank and preventing the contents of the tank from entering a watercourse or contaminating land. Each of our Bund tanks is designed to work with one of our dosing tanks. The 172701-dosing tank has a 100 Litre capacity and is designed to stand inside the 172701-bund. The 172701-Bund has a volume of 110% bund capacity of the 172701-dosing tank capacity, that is 110 Litres.

Fabricated Tank Bunds

Bunded or outer skinned tanks for dosing chemicals has always been a challenge as many dosing installations require power and mounting apparatus for pumps. With the ability to make these completely bespoke, we can match the size and shape exactly to suit your project.

Bunded Plastic Chemical Tanks

Examples of some of the products stored in Enduramaxx acid tanks which are generally bunded are; Sulphuric acid, Hydrochloric acid, Hydrofluoric acid, Nitric acid, Sodium hypochlorite, Sodium hydroxide, Ammonia solution, Ferric sulphate and chloride, Aluminium sulphate and Polymers. Other applications include storage of Admix and Construction admixtures, Caustic Soda Tanks, Deicer Tanks, Sodium Hydrochloride Tanks & Sodium Hydroxide Tanks.

Bulk Storage Tanks

These single wall chemical tanks are rotationally moulded for storage of liquids up to 2 SG.  This storage tank range is manufactured with lifting lugs, overflow, inlet and outlet locations that can take up to 150mm fitting(s). We offer customisation to our clients to meet specific needs such as additional bulkheads, welded flanges and more.  Bunding is often required for single-wall tanks to meet the requirements for secondary containment

Drip Trays

Drip trays are often used beneath equipment liable to small leaks, such as pumps, in-process applications buildings and are effectively mini-bunds.

Dosing Cabinets & Bunds

These bespoke bunds from polypropylene (PP) for the water treatment industry. Polypropylene has high chemical resistance and widely used in the water treatment industry. Dosing cabinets are manufactured to suit our client’s specific requirements and can include features such as integrated sumps, splash protection, secondary containment, enclosed pump kiosks and control panel supports.

Bund Maintenance

Bund maintenance is extremely important which is often overlooked, as with all infrastructure bunds can wear over time. Ensuring a suitable maintenance and inspection regime is in place will help you to extend the lifespan of the bund as any necessary repairs.
